What is AI in Plain English? - Beginner - 1 of 10

Understand Artificial Intelligence without the technical mumbo-jumbo.

Imagine you’ve hired a super fast, ultra-organized assistant. This assistant can read thousands of pages in seconds, summarize them instantly, and even help you write emails, create images, or make decisions based on data—without ever sleeping.

That’s AI in a nutshell.

So What Is AI Really?

AI (Artificial Intelligence) is the ability of a computer program to mimic human intelligence. It can do things like:

·       Understand what you’re saying (microphone)

·       Learn from patterns in data

·       Predict what you might need next

·       Help automate tasks you usually do manually

But here’s the important part: AI isn’t magic. It’s just smart math + a lot of data + fast computing.

A Simple Analogy

Think of AI like cruise control in a car.

·       Old cruise control: You set the speed, and it stays there (basic automation).

·       Modern adaptive cruise control: It senses traffic, slows down, and speeds up automatically (AI-powered).

Same for business:

·       Old tools followed simple rules.

·       New AI tools adapt to the situation.

Where Do You See AI Today?

You already use AI every day:

·       Siri or Alexa understanding your voice

·       Netflix recommending shows

·       Gmail finishing your sentence

And now small businesses are using AI for:

·       Drafting social media posts

·       Handling basic customer support

·       Predicting inventory needs

·       Generating reports

What AI Can’t Do (Yet)

·       Feel emotions

·       Understand context the way humans do

·       Replace judgment and experience

That’s why AI is best used with people, not instead of them.

Bottom Line

AI is not some futuristic robot invasion. It’s a practical, everyday tool that helps your business save time, make better decisions, and reduce repetitive work.

You don’t need a PhD. You just need a willingness to explore.

Practical Example

·       “I am having a problem in Word.  The paragraphs are not behaving how I want.”  I can literally speak in or type in those two sentences.  Immediately ChatGPT gives me a set of proposed fixes.

My Recommendation

·       Put ChatGPT on your phone.  Every time you think of a question use the voice interface to ask your question.  That is how I got started.  Before I knew it, I was using AI all day long.
