Server Virtualization

May 5, 2025 at 3:25 pm, 1 comment

We service customers in the small to medium markets ($1mil-$50mil) range. At the smaller end many of our customers have not yet encountered server virtualization. Most of them have no server or a single server without virtualization. So, I have come up with a train metaphor to help with the explanation. To summarize, with server virtualization we can give your company a high degree of resilience with only a small increase in your budget. In the event of a disaster (lightning strike, hurricane, theft, etc.) we can bring you a server, hook up your cars and have your train moving again in the same day! See our website blog for more detail.

Train Analogy for Server Virtualization (Small Business Version)

โœ… Old Model (Pre-Virtualization)

  • Imagine your company as a train โ€” but itโ€™s just one engine.
  • All the weight โ€” accounting, file sharing, applications, customer data โ€” is loaded into that single engine.
  • If the engine breaks down, the entire train stops.
  • For small businesses, thatโ€™s a risky setup: one hardware failure can halt the whole company.

๐Ÿ›

Modern Model (With Virtualization)

  • You still have one physical engine (one server), but now you divide it into multiple train cars using software.
  • Each train car (Virtual Machine or VM) holds a separate function:

๐Ÿšƒ One car for accounting

๐Ÿšƒ One car for file sharing

๐Ÿšƒ One car for other applications

  • Each car operates independent of the engine.

๐Ÿ”„

Disaster Recovery Advantage

  • If the engine breaks, you donโ€™t lose the cars โ€” theyโ€™re intact and can be moved to another engine.
  • We can bring in a replacement (even an older or borrowed server) and reattach your cars (VMs) to that engine.
  • Result:

โœ… Youโ€™re back in business quickly.

โœ… Youโ€™re no longer tied to one specific piece of hardware.

โœ… You gain resilience, even on a small budget.

๐Ÿ’ก

Why This Matters for Small Businesses

  • Virtualization gives small companies big-company resilience without big-company spending.
  • It improves backup, recovery, and flexibility โ€” so no single server failure can wipe you out.

Many years ago I used this train analogy at a manufacturing company. The owner understood the virtualization value immediately!
